Duas are actually prayers and requests made to Allah SWT. A person can express his needs, desires, or difficulties in Duas. The word “Dua” is an Arabic word (دعاء) which means to call out or ask for help. When a person asks Duas, he is making a direct connection with Allah SWT. As Dua is a fundamental part of worship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Dua is the essence of worship.” – Jami’ at-Tirmizi 2969
Duas can be recited at any moment, also during Umrah. Umrah Duas in Arabic are the special prayers and words that a Muslim asks from Allah SWT. Even though there are some steps in Umrah where specific Duas and Dhikr are taught to be recited, these are both Masnoon (which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did) and general Duas that a person does from his heart. Reciting supplications at every step of Umrah gives you benefits, and it’s permissible for a pilgrim to make as many Duas as he wants.
By the way, Umrah Duas can be translated into any language, but Arabic is the core language of Duas as well as Islam. Arabic is also the language of the Holy Quran and the official language of the Middle East. Do you know that Arabic is a Semitic language that includes Hebrew and Aramaic?
So, here we see the Umrah Duas in Arabic, which will be a step-by-step guide for pilgrims. Let me tell you that Umrah has four main steps that are:
- Wearing Ihram attire
- Performing Tawaf around the Kaaba
- Performing Sa’ee around the Safa and Marwah hills
- Doing Halq or Taqsir
All the Duas of Umrah are recited while performing these rituals. Some Duas are recited at the stages that occur between the rituals. Let’s see the details!
Dua for Umrah Travel (When Leaving Home)
In Islam, leaving home is accompanied by an action of intention, especially when the journey is for worship or pilgrimage. It’s Sunnah to pray and seek Allah’s protection and blessings at the beginning of every journey. Before leaving the home, a pilgrim should make an intention in his heart, such as, “I am leaving to worship Allah SWT and perform Umrah”. Decide in your heart that “I am going to Makkah for Umrah”. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always recited Dua before starting journeys, such as the below:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ وَالْوَلَدِ
“O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the difficulties of travel, from having a bad or distressing appearance, and from evil eyes in my wealth, family, and children.” – Sahih Muslim: 1342
Similarly, the following Dua is recited while sitting on a plane or any vehicle. This is Masnoon when mounting a ride:
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَلَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ
“Glory be to Him Who has subjected this (vehicle) for us, though we could never have done it by ourselves, and indeed, to our Lord we will surely return.” – Sunan Abi Dawud: 2599
Note: This Dua is also mentioned in the Holy Quran’s chapter Az-Zukhruf (43:13 and 14).
Dua for Making Intention of Umrah in Ihram Attire
Ihram is the specific attire that pilgrims wear to start Umrah. This is basically white color clothes for men and black/white (Abaya) for women. The word Ihram is an Arabic word that means purity or being in a pure state. When in Ihram attire, the first thing to make Niyyah (intention) is from the heart. It can also be done by saying verbally:
لَبَّيْكَ اللّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً
“O Allah, here I am to perform Umrah.”
OR
“O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.”
Keep in mind that the intention must be to perform Umrah for the sake of Allah SWT, and this is the first step before going on to other rituals. When you reach the Miqat point, where Ihram is worn, make the intention there.
After making intention, you recite the Talbiyah of Umrah:
لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ والنِّعْمَة لَكَ والمُلْكُ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ
“Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.” – Sahih al-Bukhari: 1549
According to Sunnah, continue reciting Talbiyah until you reach near the Kaaba for the beginning of Tawaf. It can be recited both by heart and mouth. Actually, Talbiyah is calling to Allah SWT and expressing your worship. This is the important part of the Umrah pilgrimage.
Dua When Entering the Masjid al-Haram for Umrah
When you enter Masjid al-Haram with the intention of Umrah, you should recite this Dua:
اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
“O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.” – Sahih Muslim: 713a
This Dua is according to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to seek blessings and mercy from Allah SWT. The Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ way was to place the right foot first in the Mosque with the recitation: “بسم الله اللهم صل على محمد” and with the Dua mentioned above.
So, when entering the Grand Mosque of Makkah for Umrah or for any purpose, take the first step with the right foot. Masjid al-Haram is the largest and holiest Mosque in the world, which holds the Kaaba and Maqam-e-Ibrahim. The purpose of entering this Mosque is to worship, pray, and perform Tawaf & Sa’ee. Hence, some Sunnah and respect should be kept in mind.
Duas to Recite During Tawaf of Umrah
Tawaf is a significant ritual of Umrah. This involves walking around the Kaaba seven times, inside the Haram. Reciting Duas during Tawaf is a source to maintain constant direction with Allah SWT. There are no obligatory prayers during Tawaf, but Sunnah and Masnoon Duas can be recited.
Tawaf starts from the Hajar-e-Aswad corner in counter clockwise direction. So, you should look towards Hajar-e-Aswad (Black Stone) and, if possible, touch it lightly or raise your hand to offer Salam. At this moment, you can recite:
بِسْمِ اللهِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
“In the name of Allah Who is the Greatest.”
After this, you will start the process of Tawaf performance. Here you can recite personal Duas and Zikr-e-Tasbeeh It’s allowed to recite different prayers in each round or repeat the same one. For instance, you should recite the following Dua in every lap or round:
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
“Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no deity but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.”
This Dua is basically the Tasbih or Tahmeed of Allah SWT, and is proven from Sahaba and Salaf that they also used to recite Tasbih during Tawaf. However, when you reach the Rukn al-Yemeni (southern corner) and Hajar al-Aswad (eastern corner) of the Holy Kaaba, you should recite a special Dua. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this:
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
“Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire.” – Sunan Abi Dawud: 1892
This Dua is also cited in the Holy Quran’s chapter Al-Baqarah (2:201).
At the time of touching Rukn al-Yemeni corner, raise your hands and keep praying the following Dua to Allah SWT:
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ
“O Allah! Make me among those who turn to You in repentance and among those who are purified.” – Jami’ at-Tirmizi: 55
Dua to Recite at Maqam-e-Ibrahim (Station of Abraham)
Maqam-e-Ibrahim is a sacred place in Islam and is very closed to the Holy Kaaba. Prophet Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) placed His feet here while building the Kaaba. In this place, a stone holds the footprint of Prophet Ibrahim (علیہ السلام). It has a glass enclosure where footprints can be seen. Allah SWT said in the Holy Quran about this place:
وَاتَّخِذُوا مِن مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى
“And take the place of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.” – Surah al-Baqarah (2:125)
It’s Sunnah and Mustahab to pray at Maqam-e-Ibrahim, but there is no fixed or obligatory Dua to recite. This means that you should offer two Rakah Nafl prayers here, which is Sunnah. You can recite Duas for your personal worldly or the Hereafter. Umrah pilgrims can also say: أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ (I seek forgiveness from Allah SWT).
Dua to Drink Zamzam Water during Umrah
Zamzam is the sacred water or spring which Allah SWT created naturally for Prophet Ismael (علیہ السلام), son of Prophet Ibrahim (علیہ السلام). Drinking Zamzam water is a means of blessings, healing, and a Sunnah act during Hajj and Umrah. This water flows from a special well inside the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said this Dua while drinking Zamzam water:
اللّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا، وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ
“O Allah! I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and a cure from every disease.”
Zamzam is not just water, but a source of prayer. Whatever intention you make when drinking it, Allah SWT bestows blessings accordingly. As the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk for.” – Sunan Ibn Majah: 3062
This is the way you should drink Zamzam water:
- Drink while standing
- Face towards the direction of Qiblah
- Start drinking by saying “بسم الله”
- Drink water in three sips
- After drinking water, thank Allah SWT by saying “الحمد لله”
Duas for Sa’ee Between Safa and Marwah During Umrah
Sa’ee (السَّعْي) is walking or running between Safa and Marwah during Umrah. This is the third ritual of Umrah, which is mandatory to perform for both male and female pilgrims. This ritual matches with the Prophet Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) and His family. When the water ran out, Hajirah (علیہ السلام) started looking for water for her son. Then, she ran between Safa and Marwah seven times. In memory of this practice, performing Sa’ee was made obligatory in Umrah and Hajj.
When you go to perform Sa’ee, recite this:
إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ
“Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.” – Surah al-Baqarah (2:158)
After that, climb the hill of Safa, face the Qiblah, raise your hands and recite this Dua:
“Allah is the Greatest (x3). There is no God except Allah, alone without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things. There is no God except Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and defeated the enemy by Himself.”
It’s Sunnah to repeat this Dua three times, and a pilgrim should also make his personal prayers each time. During every lap of Sa’ee, you can recite سبحان الله, الحمدلله, الله أكبر and استغفر الله. A famous Dua that is often recited from Safa to Marwah and Marwah to Safa:
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْأَعَزُّ الْأَكْرَمُ
“My Lord, forgive and have mercy. Indeed, You are the Most Mighty, the Most Generous.”
Dua When Leaving the Masjid al-Haram After Completing 3/4 Rituals
When you, as an Umrah pilgrim, leave the Masjid al-Haram after completing the main rituals inside, then you should recite a Dua. This Dua is actually to thank Allah SWT and ask for blessings for the next journey. A well-known recitation, proven from Hadith as well, that is recited when leaving the Grand Mosque is:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ
“O Allah, I ask You from Your Bounty.” – Sunan Ibn Majah: 772
While leaving the Mosque, it’s permissible to leave with both feet, but it’s Sunnah to leave with the left foot (like for a common Mosque). One should leave the Mosque by remembering Allah SWT and expressing gratitude.
Dua in Arabic to Complete Umrah
After performing the last and the fourth step of Umrah outside the Haram Mosque, the Halq and Taqsir (hair shaving and cutting), your Umrah will be completed. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ didn’t give any fixed prayer on the completion of Umrah. But it’s most virtuous to thank Allah SWT, to pray for forgiveness, and to pray for the acceptance of Umrah. You can recite:
“O Allah, accept this (Umrah) from me just as You accepted from Ibrahim, Musa, and from Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.”
Umrah pilgrims can also thank Allah in their own language, such as: “O Allah! You have granted me the opportunity to visit your house. I thank you.” You can also pray for your family, Ummah, and the deceased ones. After completing Umrah, you can consider yourself new, as if sins have been forgiven, and a new journey of life begins.
To sum up, these are all the Umrah Duas in Arabic with English translation to recite step by step. Umrah pilgrims can recite during each step and get blessings from Allah SWT. May Allah SWT accept your Duas during Umrah, Ameen!
